What's on the back cover?

Why does Neuro Priming Work?
Neuro Priming is a form of preventive medicine whereby mental imagery is used to review and rehearse solutions for competitive performance. Neuro Priming for Peak Performance guides the athlete in identifying the causes of their competitive anxiety and devises custom pre-set solutions to be applied during competiton.

Performing at peak performance level requires the athlete to be confident and able to adapt when things go astray. In competitive matches, the athlete who has their pre-set contingency plans has superior confidence in their problem-solving ability. Neuro priming is one of an athlete's greatest allies when it comes to grooving motor programs, strategic plans and defenses against performance anxieties.

How does the author describe his method?

Neuro Priming is the modern terminology used for mental rehearsals. Frank Giampaolo invented this books method of organizing, listening and visualizing mental and emotional solutions to tennis match drama. Neuro Priming For Peak Performance was an Amazon #1 Best Seller in the fall of 2017. The book has sold thousands of copies to date.

Why is developing the mental and emotional components important ? After losses, athletes are never heard saying: "if I would of followed through 2 inches higher, I would of won!" What we do hear is "I was up 5-2 and choked", "I don't know how to beat pushers", "that dude cheated me but I fell apart". Losses are most often blamed on the athletes software components.

Research shows that athletes perform with clarity under pressure when they customize their solutions beforehand. With Neuro Priming For Peak Performance, athletes are guided through their very own scripts of physical, mental and emotional solutions.
After customizing their solutions, athletes are instructed to record them into their cell phone dictation app and listen to their scripts at night and before match play. These mental rehearsals subconscious prime the athlete For peak performance.

This brilliant new workbook is needed because athletes routinely warm up their hardware (strokes & athleticism) prior to competition, but neglect their software solutions (mental & emotional). To compete at the higher levels, Frank recommends looking at the athletes tennis game the same way you would look at your computer. For the computer to run seamlessly, both the hardware and software have to be developed. The same holds true for the game of tennis.

What do others say about the book?

FOREWORD
As a professional ATP tennis player, I know all too well the importance of positive mental imagery as it relates to playing at my peak performance level.

Neuro Priming for Peak Performance is an innovative instructional book that takes the mystery out of the visualization process. It organizes mental rehearsals into customized scripts designed to improve every component of a tennis player's game.
I've been friends with Frank since I was a junior player. His outside the box approach to organizing and training mental and emotional skill sets is groundbreaking. Frank's Neuro Priming workbook motivates athletes to stop focusing on what could go wrong and instead, start focusing what can go right. It's the laws of attraction - the psychology of success.

Neuro Priming for Peak Performance is an indispensable tool for every serious-minded tennis competitor, parent or coach.
Steve Johnson, ATP Tennis Professsional

What did I get out of reading this book?

It took me a while to understand what this book is for. Even putting my imaginary "Professional tennis player" hat on didn't help and I went back to the author for clarification of the issues I found challenging. After studying his replies and re-reading the INTRODUCTION part of the book it dawned on me: Frank's new method could be compared to what is usually called subliminal messages, but - there's nothing subliminal about it. In order to address what's "between the ears" of an athlete, he wrote this workbook as a tool that creates mental imagery that allows that athlete to rehearse solutions for competitive performance.

"Competitive successes or failures aren't the results of a singular performance, but the result of the athlete's physical, mental and emotional routines and rituals."

Frank not only tells a parent, coach, teaching professional to stop spending all of the time "grooving forehands and backhands" and instead pay attention to the mental and emotional training, but he also gives them the tool to customize audio recordings designed to allow the athlete to compete under stress at full potential. And Frank is adamant that neural priming is not meant to replace an athlete's on-court tennis training. It's an "essential enhancement of their mental, emotional and physical skills."

"Just as priming muscles before competition increases athleticism, neuro priming increases cognitive processing speed."

So, this booklet provides the coach with a customized script in their athlete's very own voice via a series of audio recordings on their phone. From page 19 on the book turns into a workbook for creating those audio scripts, with plenty of examples and solutions.

"In competitive matches, the athlete who has their pre-set contingency plans has superior confidence in their problem-solving ability."

For designing and recording those protocols, Frank offers the following method for the players:

Step 1
Discuss each audio recording topic with your coach.

Step 2
Find a quiet space and get comfortable for reading the customized scripts into the smartphone.

Step 3
Begin mental rehearsals in a calm mental state while visualizing your physical, mental and emotional skill sets,
apply realistic imagery using slow motion and real-time visualization.

Frank suggests the best times for neuro priming are nightly before falling asleep, early mornings, during drive time, before matches, between points and change-overs and after competition as a performance review.

"By creating customized audio recordings and then routinely listening to their recordings, the athlete strengthens the neural pathways required for competition."

I find the benefits of Frank's methods amazing. Increased confidence, choking and panicking resolution, enhance problem-solving skills, quickened cognitive processing speed are just a few of the benefits. Looks to me neuro priming may be applied in other areas of life, not only athletic performance. How about in your job? Or in a relationship? How about learning to ski or to drive a car? This all may sound far-fetched, but who knows?

I can see Neuro Priming for Peak Performance become a requirement in many competitive sports. The success of Steve Johnson is proof that Frank's method works.
