SINGLES - Konta Claims Miami Crown,
Conquers Wozniacki For Biggest Career Title
British
No.1 Johanna Konta took home her first Premier Mandatory title
at the Miami Open, dismissing former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki
in straight sets.
No.10 seed Johanna Konta put on an emphatic performance to knock
out former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki, 6-4, 6-3, to win the
biggest title of her career at the Miami Open.
"It's all kind of sinking in," Konta said. "I
think going into any match, but also against someone like Caroline
who's such as athlete and can really stay out there as long as
she needs to, it was really important for me to straightaway
assert myself in the manner I wanted to play just so I had it
clear in my head and give myself the best chance of executing
what I wanted to tactically."
Konta was playing
in her second Premier Mandatory final out of the last three,
having finished runner-up at the China Open last fall. Fresh
off a third straight win over five-time Wimbledon winner Venus
Williams, Konta played with relentless aggression against Wozniacki
on Saturday, hitting 33 winners to just 19 unforced errors to
wrap up the match in one hour, 35 minutes.
DOUBLES - Dabrowski, Xu Stun Mirza, Strycova To Cap
Fairytale Run At Miami Open
Unseeded
and looming Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan knocked out four
of the Top 8 seeds en route to their biggest career title at
the Miami Open.
Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan had never played together before
coming to Crandon Park and taking the Miami Open by storm, stunning
Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova, 6-4, 6-3, to take home the
biggest title of their career.

SINGLES - Federer Completes Third Sunshine
Double With Miami Title
Swiss captures 26th
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown. The legend continues to grow.
Roger
Federer extended his run of dominance in 2017, clinching his
third title of the season 6-3, 6-4 over Rafael Nadal on Sunday
at the Miami Open presented by Itau.
Federer added to his ATP World Tour Masters 1000 legacy, notching
his 26th crown and third Sunshine Double (2005-06), having lifted
the trophy in Indian Wells two weeks prior. The Swiss, who is
projected to return to the Top 5 of the Emirates ATP Rankings
at No. 4 on Monday, earned his 91st tour-level title in total.
On song throughout
the fortnight in Miami, Federer rarely put a foot wrong in Sunday's
final, prevailing after one hour and 34 minutes. He fired 29
winners, including 19 off his forehand wing and five aces. The
Swiss claimed two of nine break points, while turning aside all
four faced. It was Federer's first title at the hard-court event
since defeating coach Ivan Ljubicic in 2006.
DOUBLES - Melo/Kubot Capture First Masters 1000 Team
Title
Two-time
team titlists Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo added their first
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown to their trophy haul on Saturday
afternoon.
The Polish/Brazilian combination dismissed Americans Nicholas
Monroe and Jack Sock 7-5, 6-3 to win the Miami Open presented
by Itau doubles title.
Kubot/Melo had
won back-to-back Erste Bank Open 500 championships in Vienna
in 2015 and 2016, but the two had never won a Masters 1000 crown.
They came close last month, falling to Raven Klaasen/Rajeev Ram
in the BNP Paribas Open final in Indian Wells.
But on Saturday,
Kubot/Melo were clutch and came through on one of the game's
biggest stages. The titlists saved eight of nine break points
and broke the Americans three times in the 82-minute final.

@stu_fraser - Federer:
"Wimbledon has to be the biggest goal now. I will stay on
hard courts for the next month & get on clay two weeks before
the French"
@BenRothenberg - Wise
of Federer to most skip clay to optimize his health + readiness
for grass. Been saying more should do this for years. #coughvenuscough

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
