SINGLES - Victor's Triple Treat
In Quito
Estrella
Burgos defeats Lorenzi in championship match
Victor Estrella Burgos completed a dramatic three-peat on Sunday
at the Ecuador Open in Quito, saving a match point against third
seed Paolo Lorenzi to take the title 6-7(2), 7-5, 7-6(6).
The victory over Lorenzi completes a truly unforgettable week
for Estrella Burgos. He also saved three match points to defeat
top seed Ivo Karlovic in a third-set tie-break in the second
round.
The Dominican Republican player improves to 15-0 in Quito. He's
the only player in ATP World Tour history to win at least three
titles in one event and none anywhere else. Estrella Burgos also
defeated Feliciano Lopez in a third-set tie-break to prevail
in 2015, and beat Thomaz Bellucci in a tight three-set match
in the 2016 final.
DOUBLES - Cerretani / Oswald Prevail
In Quito
Unseeded
pair pick up first title of 2017
James Cerretani and Philipp Oswald picked up their first ATP
World Tour title as a team on Saturday at the Ecuador Open in
Quito, prevailing over second seeds Julio Peralta/Horacio Zeballos
6-3, 2-1, after Zeballos was forced to retire with a neck injury.
"We're very happy with the win here, but we feel bad for
our opponents. They were a little injured and that's not the
way you'd like to win a match," said Cerretani. "The
event here in Quito was world-class, though, and the people and
the organisation were very friendly in every way."

SINGLES - Dimitrov Rules On Home
Soil
The Australian
Open semi-finalist has achieved a 14-1 match record so far this
season
Home favourite Grigor Dimitrov continues to soar in 2017 having
clinched the Garanti Koza Sofia Open title with a 7-5, 6-4 victory
over David Goffin on Sunday.
It was an extra special week for Dimitrov, who was playing a
first ATP World Tour event on home soil. His recent resurgence
up the Emirates ATP Rankings, recovering from No. 40 in July
2016 to being on the cusp of the Top 10, has captivated the nation
as fans flocked to support their countryman.
"This is my most prestigious title for sure, winning it
at home is a tremendous success for me," said the 25 year
old, having secured the trophy with his mother watching on from
court side. "I will treasure this title for the rest of
my life, it's something amazing for me."
DOUBLES - Serbian Delight In Sofia
Doubles Final
Nenad
Zimonjic landed his 54th tour-level doubles title in the Bulgarian
capital alongside his countryman
Serbian pairing Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki lifted the
Garanti Koza Sofia Open doubles title on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-4
triumph over Mikhail Elgin and Andrey Kuznetsov.
The straight-sets victory lands the Serbians their maiden trophy
together and a 54th tour-level doubles title for former doubles
World No. 1 Zimonjic. The 40-year-old Zimonjic last clinched
a trophy at the Swiss Indoors Basel in 2014 playing alongside
Vasek Pospisil and was relieved to become a champion once again.
"It's been a really long time. I had a couple of finals
in 2015 but 2016 was a really tough year for me without a steady
partner and some injuries. This is great to be back in a final
of an ATP World Tour event, to play with your really good friend.
It's an amazing feeling to do it in front of my wife, my kids,
my long-time coach, physio, it's just huge to play here,"
said Zimonjic.

Zverev wins singles and doubles crowns
It was double delight for Alexander Zverev on Sunday at the Open
Sud de France in Montpellier. Hot on the heels of winning his
second ATP World Tour singles crown, the 19-year-old German paired
with older brother, Mischa Zverev, to win the doubles crown.
The duo defeated second seeds Fabrice Martin and Daniel Nestor
6-4, 6-7(3), 0-7 in 86 minutes to lift the trophy at the ATP

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
