SINGLES - Mladenovic Majestic For
Maiden WTA Title, Outlasts Putintseva In Classic
Kristina
Mladenovic left it all on the court to capture her first WTA
title at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, dispatching Yulia
Putintseva in three epic sets.
Kristina Mladenovic won what is an undoubted front-runner for
one of the best matches of 2017, surviving an inspired Yulia
Putintseva, 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4 to win her first WTA title at the
St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy.
"I have no words, really, to express what I feel right now,"
she said after the match. "This win means a lot to me. It
was my fourth final, and I'd lost three before that. The wait
was definitely worth it because this tournament is just amazing,
from the organization all week to the show at the end.
"It was amazing getting to face so many top players, and
clinching my first WTA title here, especially at a Premier event,
I feel absolutely happy right now."
Mladenovic was playing her fourth WTA final with wins over Venus
Williams and defending champion Roberta Vinci. That experience
shone through from the start against Putintseva, who had battled
through back-to-back three-setters against Svetlana Kuznetsova
and Dominika Cibulkova to reach her first championship match.
DOUBLES - Ostapenko / Rosolska Capture
Taiwan Open Doubles Title
In the doubles
final, Jelena Ostapenko partnered doubles specialist Alicja Rosolska
to upset No.2 seeds Darija Jurak and Xenia Knoll, 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.
It was the young Latvian's first WTA title.
"I think we were a really good combination because Jelena
is a very strong player and I'm more touch and have more experience
in doubles," Rosolska said after the match. "When we
combined out skills on the court, we could make it through the
matches.
"It was a great week in doubles, and my first WTA title
in doubles, so I was very happy to play here," Ostapenko
added.
"I actually started to play more doubles; this year I was
in the semis in Auckland, and the third round of the Australian
Open. This week, I tried to use doubles for practice, but I played
so well with Alicja that I won the title!" |

SINGLES - Svitolina Sails To Taiwan
Open Title
Top seed
Elina Svitolina capped off a solid week in Taipei City with a
fifth career WTA title, winning a decisive championship match
against resurgent veteran Peng Shuai.
Elina Svitolina took home her fifth career WTA title on Sunday,
dismissing Peng Shuai, 6-3, 6-2, to win the Taiwan Open.
"This morning I just decided to give 100%, even 150% if
there's such a thing, in this match," she said in her post-match
press conference. "It's a final, so you always want to be
at the top of your game, but it's not always possible.
"Obviously, your opponent is going to come out confident
because she's also in the final and deserves to be there as much
as you do. That's why I just tried to give everything on the
court, be focused for each point.
DOUBLES - Chan Sisters Successfully
Defend Taiwan Doubles Title
In the doubles
final, hometown favorites and top flight doubles team Chan Hao-Ching
and Chan Yung-Jan defended their title, defeating the Czech duo
of Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova, 6-4, 6-2 in one hour
and 11 minutes on court.
"We did very well in the first set and continued the good
form through to second," Hao-Ching said after the match.
"I think we communicate well and our strategy worked.
"We are able to beat many great teams and we're going quite
well. Look forward to winning more titles."
"We didn't start quite well this year without a win before
we started Taiwan but really glad that we could defend the title
back home," Yung-Jan added.
"We complement each other very well. And we believe we are
the right one for each other."

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
