SINGLES - Serena Williams Breaks
Grand Slam Record With AO Title
Serena Williams
won her 23rd Grand Slam title with a 6-4, 6-4 win over sister
Venus Williams at the Australian Open, earning an Open Era record
in tennis.
"It's such a great feeling to have 23," she said after
the match. "I've been chasing it for a really long time.
When it got on my radar, I knew I had an opportunity to get there,
and I'm here. I'm here.
Williams, 35,
had equaled Stefanie Graf's record with her 2016 Wimbledon triumph.
The German's original 22-slam mark had stood since the 1999 French
Open.
Serena now has
seven Australian Open titles, making it her joint-most successful
Grand Slam alongside Wimbledon. She has also won six US Open
titles and three at Roland Garros.
SINGLES - Champions Corner: Stress-Free
Serena Sails To the Top Of The Sport Down Under
Following
her record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam triumph at the Australian
Open, newly re-crowned World No.1 Serena Williams sat down with
a small pool of reporters after her non-stop media duties, reflecting
on her fortnight and look ahead at what's to come:
DOUBLES - Mattek-Sands & Safarova
Surge To Second Straight Slam In Oz
No.2 seeds
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova survived a tense three-setter
against the newly formed pairing of Andrea Hlavackova and Peng
Shuai to win their second Slam in a row, winning the 2017 Australian
Open women's doubles title, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3.

SINGLES - Federer Tops Nadal In
Epic For 18th Major Crown
Federer wins fifth
Australian Open crown
He's been a man on a mission in Melbourne the past two weeks
and the dream came true for Roger Federer on Sunday evening as
he toppled his great rival, Rafael Nadal, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6,
6-3 in the Australian Open final to win his 18th Grand Slam championship.
SINGLES - Roger Bevels In 'Beautiful
Moment'
Swiss wins his first
Grand Slam title since 2012 Wimbledon
The talk of history could wait for Roger Federer.
Hours after the Swiss had won his 18th Grand Slam title, padding
his own record, the 35 year old wasn't interested in discussing
what it meant to add another victory to his historic tally and
increase the distance between he and Rafael Nadal and Pete Sampras,
both of whom have 14 Grand Slam crowns.
DOUBLES - Kontinen / Peers Capture
Aussie Open Doubles Title
Finnish-Aussie duo
lift first Grand Slam trophy
John Peers ended his home country's Australian Open title drought,
as he and Henri Kontinen ousted six-time champions Bob Bryan
and Mike Bryan 7-5, 7-5 on Saturday at Melbourne Park.
The reigning ATP Finals champions took the inside track in returning
to The O2 in London, claiming their first Grand Slam title together
and improving to an impressive 6-1 in tour-level finals. They
dropped just one set en route to the title, edging the Bryans
behind 12 aces and three breaks of serve after one hour and 14
minutes.
For Kontinen, it was his maiden major crown in his first final,
while Peers lifted his first trophy in his third title match.
He previously finished runner-up alongside Jamie Murray at Wimbledon
'15 and the US Open '15.

5 Things
We Learned At The 2017 Australian Open
We look into five storylines that
emerged during the season's first Grand Slam
1. ROGER AND RAFA AREN'T
DONE YET
With Rafael Nadal's ongoing wrist issues causing him to cut this
past season short in October, and Roger Federer sitting out after
Wimbledon to continue rehabbing following knee surgery, some
critics wondered if their bodies could withstand the rigours
of professional tennis. Those doubts were swiftly erased by both
players with their form this tournament.

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
