SINGLES - Niculescu
Shocks Kvitova For Luxembourg Crown
Third time's
a charm for Monica Niculescu, who upset the top seed Petra Kvitova
to win the title in her third appearance at the BGL BNP Paribas
Luxembourg Open final.
The Romanian made back to back runs to the final here in 2011
and 2012, but each time fell just short of capturing the title.
But this time, Niculescu started out strong and finished even
stronger, steamrolling to a 6-4, 6-0 victory to claim her first
WTA title of the year.
@WTA - In her happy
@Iwtp_lux trophy speech, Monica Niculescu said today is her mom's
birthday, making her 3rd title a great gift!

SINGLES - Kuznetsova
Dashes Gavrilova Dream To defend Moscow Title & Claim Singapore
Birth
Svetlana
Kuznetsova produced her best tennis when it mattered most to
swat aside Daria Gavrilova and reclaim the Kremlin Cup.
In front of a partisan Russian crowd, hungry to see their No.1
reclaim the title and qualify for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals
Singapore presented by SC Global, Kuznetsova overcame a nervous
start to run out a 6-2, 6-1 winner.
Last-Gasp Kuznetsova
Books Final Singapore Spot With Moscow Heroics
For the sixth
time in her career Svetlana Kuznetsova has qualified for the
WTA Finals, punching her ticket to Singapore on the last possible
day of the season.
Kuznetsova entered
this week's Kremlin Cup in Moscow knowing that anything other
than the title would leave her agonizingly short of a place at
the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
While the other seven qualified players were participating in
Saturday's All-Access Hour, 5,000 miles away Kuznetsova was successfully
defending her Moscow title with victory over Daria Gavrilova.

SINGLES - Carreno Busta
Beats Fognini For Moscow Crown
Pablo Carreno
Busta overcame injury and a set deficit to celebrate his second
career ATP World Tour title on Sunday at the VTB Kremlin Cup
in Moscow. The Spaniard outlasted Italian Fabio Fognini 4-6,
6-3, 6-2 inside Olympic Stadium. Carreno Busta won nearly 70
per cent of his first-serve points and benefitted from six Fognini
double faults in the one-hour and 56-minute final. He also padded
his already impressive 2016 résumé.
The 25 year old
has captured two ATP World Tour titles this season, having won
the Winston-Salem Opencrown in August (d. Bautista Agut). Carreno
Busta finished runner-up on clay in Estoril and Sao Paulo. The
Barcelona resident also became the third Spaniard to win two
ATP World Tour titles this season, joining Rafael Nadal (Monte-Carlo,
Barcelona) and Roberto Bautista Agut (Auckland, Sofia). Spanish
players have won 10 titles this season, the most of any nation.
Fognini was playing
in his 12th career ATP World Tour final and was trying to win
his fifth career title. All four of Fognini's previous titles
have come on clay. He also was going for his second title of
the season, having hoisted the Umag trophy in July.
DOUBLES - Cabal / Farah
Win First Indoor Title In Moscow
Second seeds
Juan Sebastian Cabal/Robert Farah won their fourth doubles title
of 2016 on Sunday at theVTB Kremlin Cup, fighting hard to take
a 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 victory over the veteran Austrian duo of Julian
Knowle/Jurgen Melzer.
"It's very special to win our first indoor title. We [had]
never won more than one match at an indoor tournament,"
said Cabal. "We felt very supported out there. We felt they
were cheering for a high-quality tennis match and that's what
they got."
Knowle/Melzer
were competing on the ATP World Tour together for the first time
in three years, in part due to Melzer's recent 10-month absence
with a shoulder injury. Both players were competing in their
first ATP World Tour final of 2016.

SINGLES - Del Potro
Ends Title Drought In Stockholm
Juan Martin
del Potro ended a 33-month drought in style, racing to the finish
7-5, 6-1 against Jack Sock at the If Stockholm Open on Sunday.
The Argentine's most recent tour-level crown had come againstBernard
Tomic in Sydney at the start of the 2014 season. He now owns
19 tour-level titles.
Del Potro had
come a long way back since battling wrist problems for the past
three years, but won the Stockholm title going away. He won the
title without dropping a set and was broken just twice the entire
week, both times against Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-finals.
In the final, del Potro did not face a break point and broke
serve four times.
Sock, the new
American No. 1, was on court for three hours more than del Potro
entering the final. Sock also needed to recover from a titanic
battle against #NextGen star Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals,
which he won 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 6-4 after two hours and 50 minutes.
DOUBLES - Home Sweet
Home: Ymer Brothers Blast To Stockholm Title
Swedish brothers
Elias Ymer and Mikael Ymer completed a fairytale run on home
soil, streaking to the If Stockholm Open doubles title on Sunday.
A day after dropping just seven games against second seeds Rohan
Bopanna and Treat Huey, the Ymers routed fourth seeds Mate Pavic
and Michael Venus 6-1, 6-1 in 51 minutes for their first ATP
World Tour titles. They are the first Swedish duo to claim victory
in Stockholm since 1998, when Nicklas Kulti and Mikael Tillstrom
triumphed.

SINGLES - Gasquet Wins
Inaugural Antwerp Title
Richard Gasquet
captured the title at the European Open on Sunday, fighting past
Diego Schwartzman 7-6(4), 6-1. Gasquet notched his 14th ATP World
Tour title and second of the year, having previously lifted the
trophy in Montpellier in February. He needed one hour and 29
minutes to emerge victorious, saving one of two break points
faced, while converting three of six of his own. The Frenchman
was ruthless on his first serve, claiming 29 of 33 (88 per cent)
of such points.
Schwartzman was
bidding for his second ATP World Tour title in his second final.
He captured his maiden title on the clay of Istanbul (d. Dimitrov)
earlier this year. The Argentine enjoyed a successful week in
Antwerp, having stunned top seed David Goffin in Saturday's semi-finals,
saving two match points.
DOUBLES - Nestor / Roger-Vasselin
Prevail In Antwerp
Daniel Nestor/Edouard
Roger-Vasselin continued their unbeaten streak in 2016 with a
win over top seedsPierre-Hugues Herbert/Nicolas Mahut on Sunday
in the final of the European Open in Antwerp, 6-4, 6-4.
"Anti-inflammatories, good partners. At this point in my
career, whenever somebody asks me to play, I say yes," joked
Nestor about what still keeps him having success at age 44. "Eddie
and I have always played well together, so we tried to take the
opportunity."
Herbert/Mahut were seeking their sixth ATP World Tour doubles title as a team in 2016. They've produced
a 35-9 record this season and have already confirmed their spot
for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
