SINGLES - Peng Triumphs
In Tanjin
Shuai Peng
claimed the first WTA singles title of her career by beating
Alison Riske at the Tianjin Open.
Peng, who has
slipped to No.182 in the WTA Rankings because of injury problems,
took a wildcard from the tournament and emerged victorious in
the final by beating a player ranked almost 130 places ahead
of her 7-6, 6-2.
It was Riske
who made the early running but Peng proved to be obdurate opposition,
saving nine break points before eventually succumbing to the
American.
China's Peng Shuai Captures
First Career Title At Tianjin Open
Chinese veteran
Peng Shuai captured the first title of her career at the Tianjin
Open on Sunday, beating Alison Riske in the final 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Peng, a former
U.S. Open semifinalist, was winless in six previous finals on
the WTA Tour. She saved 10 of 12 break points she faced against
Riske.
Peng finished off her rain-delayed semifinal over Danka Kovinic
earlier Sunday, winning three straight games to prevail 3-6,
7-5, 6-3 after resuming at 3-all in the third.
Riske, aiming
for her second career title, also had to play her semifinal earlier
Sunday, topping second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
Peng, who lives in Tianjin, was once ranked as high as No. 14,
but has seen her ranking slip to No. 182 due to injuries and
inconsistent play.
@usta - Congrats
to @ChristinaMcHale for winning her second WTA doubles title
of 2016 (with Shuai #Peng) at the #Tianjin Open! |

SINGLES - Murray Wins
Shanghai, Draws Closer To Novak
Andy Murray
ratcheted up the pressure on Novak Djokovic in the battle for
No. 1 after beating Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(1), 6-1 during
the Shanghai Rolex Masters final on Sunday.
Brain Game: Murray's
Impenetrable Shield Mightier Than The Sword
By Craig OShannessy
The relationship between forehands and backhands is very much
like a sword and a shield. Generally, you attack with the forehand
(sword) and defend with the backhand (shield), all the time looking
to battle from more superior court positioning than your opponent.
Murray: I Definitely
Believe I Can Get To No. 1
At the halfway point of the 2016 season, it appeared as if the
battle for year-end No. 1 was already decided. Novak Djokovic,
who had sat atop the Emirates ATP Rankings in four of the past
five years come November, opened a hefty lead over Andy Murray
following his maiden title at Roland Garros.
DOUBLES - Isner / Sock
Cruise To Shanghai Doubles Title
John Isner
and Jack Sock capped off the best week of their short-lived doubles
team career by winning one of the game's biggest titles on Sunday
at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, defeating Henri Kontinen andJohn
Peers 6-4, 6-4.

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
