DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova capped off a fairytale
reunion on Sunday afternoon with victory over Timea Babos and
Yaroslava Shvedova in the final of the Miami Open.
In 2015, Mattek-Sands and Safarova came to the fore as one of
the WTA's outstanding pairs, winning the Australian and French
Opens along the way. However, Safarova's well-documented battle
for fitness forced them to park their partnership for the opening
months of the new campaign.

SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
Novak Djokovic mastered the Miami Open presented by Itau for
a third straight year and sixth overall, downing Kei Nishikori
6-3, 6-3 to claim a record 28th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown.
The World No. 1 ended Rafael Nadal's six-year reign with at least
a share of the Masters 1000 title lead. Nadal had first assumed
the mantle from Andre Agassi in 2010. With the victory, Djokovic
also passed coach Boris Becker for sole possession of 11th place
in the Open Era match wins list, capturing his 714th win.

DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
France's Nicolas Mahut hardly could comprehend all the success
his doubles team is having.
Two weeks ago, he and compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert were giving
victory speeches in Indian Wells after winning the year's first
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament. On Saturday, they were
saying thanks in South Florida after winning the Miami Open presented
by Itau, another Masters 1000 event. The Frenchmen beat American
Rajeev Ram and South African Raven Klaasen 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 on
Saturday afternoon. Herbert and Mahut became the first doubles

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
