SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
No.2 seed Roberta Vinci won the battle of youth vs. experience
at theSt. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, defeating 18-year-old Belinda
Bencic - who is poised to crack the Top 10 next week - 6-4, 6-3
for her 10th career title, and her first on the WTA Premier level.
Vinci had overcome a thrilling quarterfinal encounter against
the big-serving Timea Babos and turned around a lop-sided head-to-head
against former No.1 Ana Ivanovic just to reach the final, but
the 32-year-old showed few signs of fatigue on Sunday, hitting
32 winners to just 12 errors.

DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
WTA Doubles Co-No.1s Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza maintained
their perfect start to 2016 - and their still-unbroken winning-streak
- in the final of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, winning their
40th straight match over Vera Dushevina and Barbora Krejcikova,
6-3, 6-1.
Dropping just one set through four more victories in Russia,
"SanTina" are now within striking distance of surpassing
the longest winning streak since 1990, when Jana Novotna and
Helena Sukova won 44 in a row; the reigning Wimbledon, US Open,
and Australian Open champions still have a way to go to break
the ultimate record of 109 - held by Martina Navratilova and
Pam Shriver in 1983.

SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
Dominic Thiem, the youngest player in the Top 20, came through
in the clutch to defeat Nicolas Almagro 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(4) and
win the Argentina Open on Sunday. Thiem was down a break in the
deciding set, but rallied strongly to notch his fourth ATP World
Tour title in two hours and 28 minutes. Among players born in
the 1990s, Thiem's title total only trails that of Milos Raonic
(8).
"It's the best of my titles so far because the tournament
draw was so strong," Thiem, who is now 4-0 in deciding tie-breaks
on the ATP World Tour, said. "You need a bit of luck to
win these kinds of tournaments, but it's probably been the best
week of my career.

DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
Top seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah wasted no time
in capturing their first ATP World Tour doubles title of the
year, downing Inigo Cervantes and Paolo Lorenzi 6-3, 6-0 in exactly
one hour in the Argentina Open final on Sunday. It was Cabal/Farah's
fifth tour-level title in 13 final appearances.
"It was a great match," Farah said. "[Juan Sebastian]
and I thought that we played at a high level, and the score said
it all. After we got the first break, we both returned very well.
We were very relaxed in the second set and stayed focused."

SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
Kei Nishikori hit the high note once again in Memphis, completing
a historic four-peat with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over American teen
Taylor Fritz on Sunday.
The Japanese joined Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic
as the only active players to win four consecutive titles at
a single tournament, turning in another efficient performance
at the Memphis Open presented by ServiceMaster.
Nishikori found the right chord in the musical metropolis of
Memphis, overcoming nine aces and turning aside five of six break
points faced. The top seed ended Fritz's Cinderella week after
the World No. 145 18-year-old streaked to his first ATP World
Tour final in just his third tour-level event.

DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Santiago Gonzalez have found a second
home in Memphis, successfully defending their doubles title with
a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey.
Fyrstenberg and Gonzalez claimed their first team title last
year at the Memphis Open presented by ServiceMaster and nearly
failed to retain the trophy, having faced three match points
in a marathon 28-point Match Tie-break on Saturday. The Polish-Mexican
duo would survive the test from Oliver Marachand Fabrice Martin
and needed just 55 minutes to dispatch their fourth seeded American
opponents on Sunday.

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
